BACKGROUND:
The Franciscan padres that settled California in 1700’s made this fortified style of wine from the Mission grape, a tradition that has survived until today. Angelica is named after the city of Los Angeles, where the first missions in San Gabriel and San Fernando were settled. My particular rendition is named after the famous El Aliso tree that grew near Alameda St outside Vignes winery (in what is today Downtown LA), to honor its origin. The tree was so big that it could be seen from miles away and survived into the late 1800’s. When they cut it down, it had over 400 rings.

STYLE:
Angelica is a port-like fortified wine with a smooth, warming sweetness that pairs wonderful with savory plates, cheeses and cold cuts. Or just as a sipper in front of the fireplace when the rain rages outside. Not too sweet or cloying, just the right side of inviting. Oak aging has brought out nutty complexities that linger on palate for long time. It also shines as a wonderful cocktail paired with tonic, Angelica + Tonic. Very refreshing.

VINEYARD:
Somers Vineyard is one of the few remaining Mission vineyards left. Prob planted in the early 70’s, nobody knows exactly. They grow right next to the river in the Mokelumne River AVA, Lodi, California and are mostly dry farmed, since their roots reach deep.
